Last we saw of C3 Technologies’ 3D mapping software it was making an appearance on Sony Ericsson’s X10, but if 9to5Mac turns out to be right, its next stop could be the iPhone. According to the publication, Cupertino recently scooped up the Saab spin-off and C3 execs have since been working closely with the iOS division. Earlier this year, Apple posted job listings, looking for developers to “radically improve how people interact with maps and location-based services.” On a related note, the outfit previously acquired Poly9, a web-based mapping company. So is the fruity one looking to up its street (navigation) cred? Is it finally ready to give Google Maps the boot? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Apple reportedly acquires C3 Technologies, iOS Maps overhaul on the horizon? originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 29 Oct 2011 19:04:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? The crowded advertising technology sector may be about to shake out some losers.

With north of 150 companies — according to consultant and investment banker Luma Partners — in the relatively new online advertising industry, there are simply too many competitors seeking too much of a return on capital.

Add in a drop-off in potential buyers and a declining appetite for public offerings, and the online advertising sector is due to stall, industry players and backers say.

“It’s just not a big enough market for all the money invested,” said Will Margiloff, chief executive officer of Ignition One, the digital marketing technology unit of Japanese ad agency Dentsu.

“That is a real challenge — VCs and private equity guys are trying to figure out how to jump on the ad tech bandwagon and are really grasping. There can’t be six or seven category leaders.”

To Margiloff, the problem is that some of these companies frequently have more money invested in them than revenue potential, and often the revenue opportunity involves a more service-oriented action such as sales rather than a unique technological capability.

“The valuations that you see are more the heyday of the Right Media sale to Yahoo — 10 times revenue,” said Margiloff about Yahoo’s $680 million purchase in 2007 of the remaining 80 percent stake in the company that it did not already own. “That is not reality … Two to three times revenue is more realistic.”

On top of that, the likely buyers have been sidelined dealing with their own issues.

For instance, AOL and Yahoo, both of which would be obvious buyers for online advertising start-ups, are in the midst of turnaround efforts that have left them with leadership vacuums and takeover vulnerability.

Then there are companies like Google and eBay that have already placed their bets on a few companies in the sector.

Google agreed to buy display ad company Admeld in June, for $400 million, according to TechCrunch and the New York Times, and eBay acquired GSI Commerce for $2.4 billion. Google’s deal is awaiting approval from the Department of Justice.

With the usual suspects on the sidelines, there are still investors who think they can pick winners from a crowded field.

David Pakman, a partner at venture capital firm Venrock who has been investing in the ad tech space for a decade, is still bullish about the sector.

Among his investments was DoubleClick, which Google ended up buying for $3.1 billion in 2007. Venrock has also invested in online advertising companies AppNexus and Media6Degrees.

“As an investor we like markets that attract lots of innovative activity,” he said, adding that he considers the sector dynamic. “Is everyone going to exit? No. It doesn’t mean it’s a bad opportunity.”

Indeed, in the first half of 2011, roughly $5.7 billion worth of deals have taken place in the online advertising sector, according to JEGI Transaction Data.

John Lambros, managing partner and head of digital media at investment bank GCA Savvian, believes that the longer consolidation takes, the more buying opportunities open up for private players and unusual suspects like Oracle, IBM or Accenture.

“There are a lot of companies in the sector,” Lambros said. “The real question is how do the market leaders gain scale and mind share. I don’t think the market has shaken itself out to say who are the winners and who are the losers.”

Michael Cassidy, founder and chief executive of privately held, 10-year-old display ad platform Undertone agrees, saying the lower valuations and the absence of bellwether buyers have given him room to become an acquirer. His profitable company is in the market for acquisitions of up to $100 million, he said.

According to Ian Sigalow, a partner at venture capital firm Greycroft Partners, advertising technology companies focused on the demand-side of the equation — selling directly to agencies and marketers — have a much better chance of flourishing.

“At the end of the day, only a few platform companies will exist,” said Sigalow.

During the first half of 2011, Internet ad revenues increased about 23 percent to $14.9 billion, according to the Interactive Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers. (Reporting by Jennifer Saba; Editing by Peter Lauria; Editing by Gary Hill)

Frank Rost, Marvin Chavez

updated 12:33 a.m. ET Oct. 27, 2011

FRISCO, Texas – Joel Lindpere scored in the 61st minute and the New York Red Bulls withstood a late charge to hold off FC Dallas 2-0 on Wednesday night in an MLS Wild Card playoff match.

New York advanced to face Los Angeles in the semifinals. The Red Bulls host the first leg Sunday and the second leg is at the Galaxy on Nov. 3.

Frank Rost made eight saves for the shutout, despite the team playing a man down from the 79th minute on after Solli Jan Gunnar was ejected with a red card.

“I suppose you can compare this match with the match four weeks ago, it was the same,” said Rost, referring to New York’s 1-0 win here Sept. 17 that sparked the Red Bulls’ 4-2-1 stretch run that helped them land the final spot in the postseason. “We defended well and we scored with our two chances and that’s football.”

Thierry Henry scored in the 96th minute to finish it off just seconds before the final whistle.

“A solid game for us, definitely the key for us was our defense,” said New York coach Hans Backe, whose club has now won four consecutive road playoff matches. “Even when we were one down, they still showed unbelievable discipline in our defense. I’m excited, I’m very pleased with our defense.”

Dallas lost in the MLS Cup final last season.

“I really thought that we came out very lively and with really good team chemistry and to do everything we possibly could to get the result we wanted,” said Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman. “I thought we put some really good pressure on New York, but we just couldn’t get on the end of some of the services, or we couldn’t get the shot on frame. I thought we did everything we possibly could. No excuses, they came in and beat us on our field.”

Lindpere connected in the 61st minute to put New York up 1-0. Seconds after Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman made a spectacular diving save on Lindpere’s blast from 25 yards out, Mehdi Ballouchy fed a pass from the right side of the penalty area into the middle, where the charging Lindpere slid feet-first to chip it past Hartman.

“I ended up cutting back and playing it to my left,” said Ballouchy, who had just entered the game two minutes earlier. “Their back stepped up and opened up Joel and he was able to finish it. We were fortunate to get the first goal of the game.”

It was the second career MLS playoff goal for Lindpere, who had seven goals and seven assists during the regular season.

Dallas nearly tied it in the 76th minute when leading scorer Brek Shea chased down a loose ball on the left side of the area and popped it over the sliding Rost towards the open net, but defender Tim Ream managed to clear it out.

“He knows if I go out, he stays on the line,” Rost said of Ream. “It’s automatic, if you play week-for-week, then you have the rhythm. We’ve played in this formation for the fourth or fifth time, and you can see it.”

The complexion of the match then changed three minutes later when Gunnar was shown the red card for his slide tackle that took out Dallas captain Daniel Hernandez.

“I would say I can understand the referee after seeing the replay,” said Backe of the call. “I think it is a 50-50. In England it would be a yellow, definitely, but I can understand why he gave him the red card.”

Dallas continued to press for the equalizer, but Rost denied Jackson Goncalves’ 20-yard shot in the 85th minute and then Maicon Santos’s blast from 25 yards out curled just wide of the right goalpost.

The teams wound up playing 10-on-10 for the 6 minutes of stoppage time when Dallas defender Zach Loyd was injured and carried off on a stretcher, after Dallas had already used up all of its substitutions.

Henry, who finished third in the MLS with 14 regular season goals, sealed the win following a breakaway just before the final whistle.

After chasing down a New York clear, he dribbled into the penalty area, where Hartman stopped the initial shot, but the rebound rolled towards the right post and Henry got to it first, tapping it over the line.

(AP) ? Exxon Mobil’s quarterly profit rose 41 percent because the company sold oil and natural gas at higher prices, making up for lower production.

The world’s largest publicly traded oil company, which owns and operates oil and gas fields from Texas to Qatar, said prices rose sharply in the third quarter. Its refineries also charged more for gasoline and other fuels that they make from oil.

Exxon sold oil in the U.S. for an average of $95.58 a barrel, up 35.2 percent from a year earlier. Internationally, it charged $107.32 a barrel, up 45.4 percent. It also charged more for natural gas.

The higher prices boosted earnings at Exxon’s exploration and production business, which finds and pumps oil and natural gas. Earnings rose nearly 19 percent in the U.S. and 61 percent internationally.

Exxon’s U.S. refineries also benefited. Their profits quadrupled as demand for gasoline and other fuels soared around the world, enabling them to charge more.

Yet the production decline was a disappointment for the Irving, Texas-based company. Exxon has outspent other oil giants over the past few years in the search for new fields. So far this year, it shelled out $24 billion on projects. Exxon’s oil production fell 7 percent while natural gas production slipped 3 percent

Some of the declines resulted from deals that limit the amount of oil Exxon can sell as prices rise on international markets. Excluding those limits, however, production was still flat.

BP and Royal Dutch Shell also reported production declines in the July-September quarter.

Still, Exxon Mobil Corp.’s total net income rose to $10.33 billion, or $2.13 per share, in the third quarter. That compared with $7.35 billion, or $1.44 per share, a year earlier.

Revenue rose 32 percent to $125.3 billion.

Shares of the Irving, Texas-based company rose Thursday after it announced the quarterly results. Investors were encouraged by oil prices in the futures market. The price of crude rose more than 3 percent to $93.10 in New York.

Exxon’s stock price climbed 9 cents to $81.16.

Exxon’s production declines this quarter raise larger concerns. It takes years to find new sources of oil, and demand is rising as China and other countries need more fuel to run and expand their economies. Analysts say they’re concerned that major producers are so far unable to supply enough crude.

“I think there is a danger that we can’t keep up with demand,” Argus Research analyst Phil Weiss said.

But if companies find and successfully pump oil, that should raise production levels and eventually provide producers with a return for the billions they’re spending on exploration.

DUBAI (Reuters) ? A prominent Saudi cleric has offered to pay $100,000 to any Palestinian who kidnaps an Israeli soldier, according to his Facebook page.

Awad al-Qarni said he had made the offer in response to a similar reward promised by an Israeli family for anyone who catches the person who killed one of its members in 1998, following the exchange this month of more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners for the captive Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

“The media reported the news of the Zionist occupiers paying a huge sum to anyone who killed the freed Palestinian prisoners,” Qarni, who is well known in Saudi Arabia for his outspoken views but is not part of the official clerical establishment, said on his Facebook page.

“In response to those criminals, I announce to the world that I am committed to pay a $100,000 prize to any Palestinian inside Palestine who takes an Israeli soldier captive to exchange with (remaining) prisoners.”

Qarni told Al Arabiya television that he had received wide support on his Facebook page and elsewhere.

“We have also received letters from … groups from Arab countries. So the issue is not limited to Qarni, who was just the person who launched this initiative,” he told the station by telephone.

Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, sees itself as a champion of Palestinian rights but Saudi leaders have been at pains to curb more radical statements by Muslim clerics on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In 2002, the Western-allied kingdom floated a peace initiative calling for full Arab recognition of Israel if it gave up all lands occupied in a 1967 war and accepts a solution for Palestinian refugees.

Rapper 50 Cent says he sometimes bullied others while growing up and now wants to use his influence on teenagers to get them thinking about the issue.

Rapper Curtis Jackson, better known as 50 Cent, is adding author to his long list of job titles with a new book about bullying.

The book, titled ?Playground,? is a young adult novel published by Razorbill that will be released on Nov. 1. The novel, illustrated by Lizzie Akana, tells the story of Butterball, a 13-year-old living on Long Island who bullies a fellow student named Maurice. In an interview on ?The Today Show? on NBC, the rapper said he drew inspiration from his own school days because he sometimes took the role of bully in the hallways.

?I had more experiences where I was a part of the problem, where I was actually bullying,? Jackson said on the show. “To know now from an adult’s perspective and be able to write things, I can look back on those actual situations and say, ‘That was completely wrong.’ ?

Jackson said the issue is close to him personally because of his son, who is 15 years old. Jackson said he is in a better position than most to speak to young adults and hopes that his influence will help the message get across.

?A lot of the times the kids that would actually be a part of the problem are listening [to my music],? he said. ?When I offer it, they’ll take the time to stop and read it.?
